Outcomes Research

Through our surgical outcomes research, we hope to improve the understanding of how to best define treatment effectiveness as well as how to maximize quality of life and overall health state in patients undergoing spine surgery. We are currently prospectively collecting several patient reported outcome metrics aimed to quantify spine-related pain, disability, health state utility, quality of life, social function, somatization, and depression. Select outcomes projects include:

  1. Defining the minimum important clinical difference in pain, disability, and utility, and quality of life measures after lumbar fusion procedures.
  2. Defining and validating quality of life questionnaires in patients undergoing spine surgery for spinal column tumors and adult deformity.
  3. Comparative effectiveness of minimally invasive versus open lumbar interbody fusion for lumbar spondylolithesis.
  4. Predictive value of ZUNG depression score and MSPQ somatization score on outcome after lumbar discectomy.
